Cell Manufacturing at Riggins

Riggins Engineering has recently added another manufacturing cell to its operations. “This brings to five the number of manufacturing cells at Riggins,” explains Joe Grossnickle, General Manager. “Our commitment to cell-based manufacturing is a direct response to the needs of our customers. The growing demand for high-quality, flexible throughput based upon ‘families’ of parts and assemblies is the dominant paradigm for the future of contract manufacturing.” During the past three years, Riggins Engineering has invested well over $900,000 in advanced manufacturing technology.

The manufacturing cells are supported by a Statistical Process Control (SPC) system to maintain our high standard of quality concurrent with the manufacturing process. The flexibility and efficiency of cell-based manufacturing enhances our service, provides exceptional value to our customers, and keeps Riggins Engineering ahead of the curve in cutting-edge manufacturing technology.

Flexible Machining System

Flexible Machining Systems (FMS) have been called the future of contract precision machining. An FMS is basically one or more machining centers linked to a computerized multi-pallet system with robotic loading capabilities. The beauty of FMS is its ability to maintain simultaneous multiple setups for a wide variety of machined components. The parts to be machined are loaded onto the tooling via one or more load stations, and programmed to be machined in a predetermined sequence. FMS runs twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, and achieves an unequalled level of efficiency for long-term jobs. FMS also provides the ability to produce a machined component very quickly because the setup is already done, making it the ideal environment for long-term purchasing agreements and just-in-time delivery schedules. Very few small to mid-size contract manufacturers have FMS capabilities. Riggins Engineering does.

Our FMS consists of four Makino horizontal machining centers, 35 pallets, four loading stations, and more than 800 tools. Our investment in this state-of-the-art technology benefits our customers in two major ways: 1) we pass along substantial cost savings based on our ultra-efficient FMS; and, 2) we provide very short-notice, quick-turnaround delivery service for components setup on the FMS. We have five full-time employees in our quality department whose only job is to make sure that our products conform to 100% of our customers’ requirements. Our inspectors on the shop floor assist our machine operators to verify that the parts and assemblies being produced meet drawing tolerances. Our job planning is reviewed by our Q.A. staff to make sure that our manufacturing process contains the proper inspection points and contract requirements.
