"Lean is the Means"

Lean Manufacturing at Riggins Engineering

March 2007

After several years of training and consultation with outside experts, Riggins Engineering has taken full control of our Lean Manufacturing Initiative. Put simply, Lean Manufacturing is all about reducing the time and resources required to produce a product by eliminating non-value-added waste in the production stream. We have permanent process improvement teams in place for tooling and maintenance. We also have two self-directed work teams, each responsible for a distinct family of parts.

As a result of Lean Manufacturing at Riggins, our quality, workflow, and shipping have all increased with the same number of employees. This equals real cost savings and improved delivery performance for our customers. Lean is the means at Riggins Engineering.

Net-Inspect™ Software Streamlines Operations at Riggins

February 2010

Riggins Engineering has recently installed Net-Inspect™ quality management software to drive continuous improvement and achieve major cost savings in our manufacturing operations. Net-Inspect™ is an Enterprise Quality Management Portal designed to provide seamless integration between manufacturing and quality operations, allowing our operators to do smarter, more efficient work while quickly identifying manufacturing problems in realtime.

Real-time manufacturing and quality data is captured during the manufacturing process via laptops on our shop floor and transmitted wirelessly to our recently-upgraded server. This information is then available throughout the enterprise, resulting in increased efficiency and instantaneous visibility for critical and timely management decisions. When a job is completed, Net-Inspect™ creates an electronic data package that can be made available to our customers via the Internet. This state-of-the-art information technology is the latest step in our ongoing program of Lean Manufacturing, resulting in substantial cost savings and improved delivery performance for our customers.

Riggins Receives ISO 9001 & AS9100 Certification

February 2010

We are proud to announce the certification of our facility to ISO 9001:2008 – ANSI/ISO/ASQ Q9001-2008 and AS9100:2009. Our certification is the result of months of hard work by the entire Riggins team, and represents another landmark in our long history of uncompromising quality and outstanding customer service.

ISO 9001 and AS9100 are internationally developed and recognized standards for business management and quality assurance, specifically designed to achieve significant improvements in quality and safety, and reductions in cost, throughout the value stream. Our entire organization is committed to delivering top-quality products, on time at competitive prices; and our ISO 9001 and AS9100 certification is a powerful testament to the streamlined and cost-efficient manufacturing environment at Riggins Engineering. New SolidWorks® 3D MCAD Software at Riggins

February 2010

Riggins Engineering has recently added SolidWorks® 3D MCAD software to our CAD/CAM capabilities. The SolidWorks® 3D MCAD software package enhances our level of collaboration with our customers, allowing for seamless integration of customer-furnished Digital Product Definitions – including CATIA files – into our engineering, manufacturing and inspection operations.

This partnership between supplier and design enterprise is crucial to maintaining reliable deliveries, superior quality and competitive pricing in today’s demanding manufacturing environment. Riggins is committed to providing cutting-edge service and dependability when it comes to the latest in value-enhancing CAD/CAM technologies.

Riggins Offers Assembly Services

February 2010

Riggins Engineering has completed installation of our new light-hardware assembly department. The addition of assembly services is in direct response to requests from our customers to install hardware components into their completed machined parts. Riggins now has customer approval to install simple hardware items such as: Lee Plugs, Helicoil Inserts, Keenserts, Pins, and more. Many of our customers find it far more cost-effective to purchase sub-assembled components rather than the machined parts alone.

Each phase of our assembly process is subject to our rigorous ISO 9001:2008 and AS9100C quality control requirements; from cleaning and preparation to final inspection of hardware installation. With our new assembly services, Riggins Engineering continues to provide economical, innovative solutions for your precision manufacturing needs.

New In-House Parts Cleaning System

February 2010

We have recently installed a state-of-the-art parts-cleaning system in support of our new assembly services, and in order to comply with strict parts-cleanliness requirements for dock-to-stock and kan-ban shipping. Our new system is approved to BPS 4108, Method B, by Parker Hannifin for parts going to assembly or final stock. Our cleaning process includes: Pressure Flush, Ultrasonic Cleaning, Hot Water Rinse, Clean Air Dry, Alcohol Bath to Dewater, FOD Inspection, and Packaging in Sealed VCI Bags.

Our new parts cleaning system is the latest addition to our ever increasing list of precision manufacturing services. Our goal is to respond to our customers’ needs with a level of service that is rarely matched in the precision machining industry. Trust Riggins Engineering to provide the manufacturing options you need to be competitive in the global marketplace.

Shop Scheduling Initiative Yields Big Results

March 2007

For the past three years, Riggins Engineering has been engaged in a bottom-up overhaul of its shop scheduling system. “We have driven shop scheduling down to the shop floor level,” explains Joe Grossnickle, general manager. “Each lead-man is responsible to solve scheduling problems and report back to the team.” Meetings are held each morning to discuss scheduling issues and to schedule the workload for the following day. “We have become pre-emptive in our scheduling effort,” says Joe. We now have the ability to look ahead at our total shop load and evaluate our booking level within a four week window.

The results are impressive with a goal of ninety-eight percent on time shipments. Pro-active shop scheduling is yet another way in which Riggins Engineering strives to offer the best service in the business. Experience the difference for yourself at Riggins Engineering.

Riggins Expands Again

March 2007

Riggins Engineering keeps on growing to keep up with an ever-increasing demand for our products. In addition to our recent 2,000-square-foot expansion to house our first Flexible Machining System, we have just added another 2,100 of manufacturing space for our second FMS. We have also moved our manual machining equipment into the new space to free up floor space and streamline our manufacturing operations.

Riggins Engineering is committed to providing the best products and service in the business. Our policy has always been one of continuous improvement combined with continuing investment in the latest precision machining technologies. You can trust Riggins to be there with the manufacturing capacity and state-of-the-art technology you need to get the job done.
